US passport and US visa photographs are 2×2 inches, about 51×51 mm — a square, not the Indian 35×45 rectangle. This page selects the USA (Passport/Visa) 2×2 preset. Head and shoulders should fill the square with the face centred.
DS-160 and other US portals also list JPEG and a file-size cap. Crop the 2×2 here, then use Image Resize if the upload is rejected for KB. This tool does not submit a visa or passport application.
White background and expression
US photo rules typically want a plain white or off-white background, a recent colour photo, eyes open and a neutral expression. Glasses rules change — read the current State Department or DS-160 photo page rather than an old blog.
Do not stretch a 35×45 Indian passport crop into a square. That distorts the face. Start from the original camera file and crop 2×2 from it.
- 2×2 in (51×51 mm) square
- White or off-white background
- Recent photo, face centred
- Resize to KB only if the portal lists a limit
Print 2×2 photos
Add copies to the queue and print on A4 or 4×6 photo paper, then cut squares. US 2×2 is larger than an Indian 35×45 print, so fewer copies fit on one sheet.
